What songs do Austin cover bands play most?

Everybody assumes cover bands all play the same songs. It is the most common thing people say about the category, and as far as we can tell nobody had ever actually counted.

So we did. In July 2026 we captured eleven complete, unfiltered song lists from working Austin bands. Across the 13 that cover a spread of decades and genres that is 3,098 songs listed, and 1,609 different songs once the repeats are counted once. We did it to build our own setlist from evidence rather than taste. The result was more interesting than the setlist.

What we counted, and how

Method first, because a number without a method is not worth citing.

• 13 Austin bands that work weddings, parties and private events and cover a spread of decades and genres. We used each band’s full published song list, with nothing cut for era or genre.
• Those 13 lists hold 3,098 songs in total.
• Some bands list the same song twice, under two different headings. Counting each song once per band is what gives the 3,098 figure.
• Plenty of songs appear on more than one list, so we counted repeats only once. That leaves 1,609 different songs. We also treated songs spelled differently as the same song, so “Dancin’ in the Dark” and “Dancing in the Dark” do not count twice.
• Two single-lane acts are excluded from every figure on this page: an eighties tribute band with 67 songs and a nineties country band with 68. Between two thirds and three quarters of what each one carries is played by nobody else in the count. They were captured in the same research and they answer a different question, so leaving them in dragged every shared-song number down and made the top of the table look thinner than it is. They stay in the dataset; they are out of the analysis.
• Two more bands were left out because their song pages were broken when we looked, and a third because it publishes no song list at all.
• Eleven lists captured 20 July 2026, two more on 28 July 2026. Counts worked out 28 July 2026.

We do not publish which bands are in the sample. The counts are totals only and they stay that way. This is a measurement of a market, not a comparison of competitors, and we do not write those.

The shared core

Here is every song carried by two or more of the 13 bands, 537 of them, ordered by how many lists it sits on. A song on a single list is that band’s own choice and tells you nothing about the market, so two is the floor.

What “no song is on all 13” actually means

It means there is not one single song that every band in this count plays. Not one. The closest anything gets is eight songs that appear on 11 of the 13 lists, which means each of those eight has exactly one band that does not carry it.

The interesting part is that it is not the same band each time. Four different bands account for those eight gaps. One skips four of them, another skips two, and two more skip one each. There is no single odd band out dragging the number down. Every list has its own holes, and they are in different places.

So the practical version, if you are hiring: there is no song in Austin you can safely assume a band plays. Even the eight most widely carried songs in this entire count each have a working band that does not play them. Ask, do not assume.

Twenty-one songs reach nine lists or more. That is the closest thing Austin has to a set of standards, and it is worth noticing how short that part of the list is before it drops away.

Two things stand out. There is a lot of Texas country at the very top, more than a national list would show. And the range is enormous: 1967 to 2015 in eighteen songs, which tells you these lists are built for rooms with three generations in them.

Most songs are not shared at all

Every song in the count sits somewhere on this table, depending on how many of the 13 bands play it.

Those 1,072 are not one band’s repertoire, which is the reading that trips people up. They are spread across all 13 bands. Every band has a private corner of songs nobody else in this count plays, and adding up all 13 corners gives 1,072, an average of 82 songs each.

The corners are wildly uneven, and that is the more useful fact. The two longest lists hold 641 of the 1,072 between them, about two thirds. At the other end one band has a corner of just 7. A long published song list is mostly long because of songs nobody else bothered with.

The other 537 songs are the shared ones: two or more bands play each of them. That is the whole overlap between every cover band in this count, out of 1,609 songs. A third shared, two thirds not.

The private corners are where each band specialises

Reading the corners is the most interesting thing in this dataset, because they are not random. Each one has a shape, and the shape is the lane that band actually works.

The largest corner in the count is 335 songs, and 21 of them are Frank Sinatra with another 7 Michael Bublé. That is not a scattering of leftovers, that is a dinner and standards book nobody else in the count carries. A second band also has 335 private songs, and its most repeated names are Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson and Neil Young: an americana lane, and a completely different one.

Further down the same pattern holds at smaller scale. One band’s corner leans on Alan Jackson, Toby Keith and Brooks and Dunn. Another on NSYNC, Usher and Backstreet Boys. Another on Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and the Jackson 5. One is holding Pachelbel’s Canon and Ave Maria, which is a ceremony book rather than a party set.

That last group is worth sitting with if you are hiring. A band whose list is 97 percent shared is not a bad band. It is a band whose repertoire, on paper, is close to interchangeable with several others. The difference between them will be how they play, not what they play, and a song list will not tell you that.

Only 126 songs, 8.4 percent of the total, appear on five or more lists. Meanwhile 1,072 songs, just over two thirds of everything, appear on one list and no other, spread across all 13 bands at an average of 91 each.

That is the opposite of what people assume, and it makes sense once you see it. Bands converge on a small set of songs that reliably fill a floor, because those songs work and everyone finds that out. Then they differentiate on everything else, because that is the only place left to differentiate.

Where we sit in our own data

It would be a poor look to publish a measure of how distinctive a band is and then leave ourselves out of it, so here is the same calculation run on our own setlist.

That is roughly half canon and half lane, which is deliberate. The shared half is there because those songs work and a room expects them. The other half is where the band actually lives: nineties alternative and grunge, hard rock, and a run of eighties material that the general-market lists in this count mostly skip.

By the measure used above we would sit among the more specialised bands here rather than the interchangeable ones. We are publishing that because the method is public and you can check it: our full setlist is up, the counts above come from the same file, and nothing stops you running the comparison yourself.

What this means if you are hiring

Ask about the songs the others do not play. “Do you play Uptown Funk” has a predictable answer and tells you almost nothing. Better questions:

1. What do you play that most bands in town do not?
2. What is the third set like, after everybody has had a drink?
3. What would you not play, and why?
4. Will you learn something specific for us, and how much notice do you need?

What the data does not say

Four honest limits, and they matter more than the headline.

• Eleven bands is not every band in Austin. It is a fair look at the working private-event circuit and nothing more.
• Two single-genre acts captured in the same research, one eighties and one nineties country, are excluded from every figure here. Their lists overlap almost nothing with the rest, so including them dragged the shared-song numbers down and answered a different question.
• A published song list is a claim about repertoire, not a record of what was played. Bands carry songs they rarely call.
• Published lists lag reality. A song that broke this year will be under-represented.
• The counts are a snapshot from July 2026. Rosters change, and this page will need recomputing rather than quietly ageing.
