Live band karaoke: your guests sing, we play

How it is different from ordinary karaoke

Ordinary karaoke is a person, a screen and a track. It works, and the reason it sometimes falls flat is that the track does not care. It starts when it starts, it runs at one tempo, and if the singer misses the entry it keeps going without them.

A band notices. If somebody comes in late we wait. If they are killing it we take another chorus. If they are dying we get them out on the next turnaround and nobody in the room quite knows why it ended when it did. That is the entire difference and it is worth more than a bigger song list.

The honest limitation

Our song choice is smaller than a karaoke library, not larger. A track service has thousands. We have what we can play properly, which is a published list you can read before you book, on the setlist page, plus anything we are given enough notice to learn.

That is a real constraint and it decides whether this is right for your event. If the point of your night is that anyone can sing anything on a whim, hire a karaoke DJ with screens and a library. Byrne Rock and Karaoke ATX both do it properly in Austin. If the point is that a handful of people are going to sing and you want them to sound good doing it, a band is the better tool.

What it is good for

• The back half of a party. An hour of live band karaoke after a dance set is a different kind of ending, and the people who want to sing have usually decided by then.
• Company events where the point is participation. Nothing flattens a hierarchy like a director singing badly with a band behind them.
• Birthdays and reunions. Small enough that everyone who wants a turn gets one.
• Any room where you want a moment, not a format. Two or three guests singing beats forty minutes of rotating strangers.

How we run it

1. Pick the window. It works better as part of a night than as the whole night.
2. Send any song someone has their heart set on, early enough that we can learn it if we do not already play it.
3. On the night, people put their name to a song rather than queueing blind, so nobody is standing at the front deciding.
4. We handle keys. If a song sits wrong for the person singing it we move it, which is a thing no backing track will ever do.

The PA and microphones are ours and are already up, which is the same reason the rest of the day sounds consistent. That is covered in house system or band-provided PA.
