Band

Live band for hire, based in Austin

We play birthdays, anniversaries, house parties, backyard parties, and company gatherings that aren’t really corporate events. We’re based in Austin, and we’ll travel if the price works. In a backyard or a ballroom, you get the same three musicians, PA, and lights, with the volume set to what the room can handle.

For your private party, we bring our own PA and stage lights.

The set length is your call, not ours

Weddings follow a set shape. Parties do not. Some go two hours while guests stream in the whole time, others go five and turn into something else partway through.

Give us your time window, and we’ll shape the sets around it. For a full evening, we play three sets with about two and a half hours of music. A shorter night can mean fewer sets that run longer, or two extended sets. What stays the same: every minute of our performance is live, and nobody’s looking at a laptop.

Backyards, plus the detail that trips people up

Austin writes the rulebook, so learn it before you plan. The City says residential properties may have amplified sound between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., with a 75-decibel maximum. After 10 p.m., the sound may not be audible beyond the property line. An outdoor sound permit isn’t required for residential properties, and the City won’t grant one for them.

For a backyard party, that means ending amplified music at 10, not waiting until the party is over. Schedule the loud part sooner than you might think. We’d rather talk about this when you book than bring it up at 9:55.

Small rooms

For a small room, a space with a shared wall, or an event where people need to talk, we play acoustically. The same three musicians sing and play, but percussion takes the place of the full drum kit. We also use this setup during cocktail hour, and it allows a lower minimum volume throughout the night.

Birthday and anniversary celebrations

Most of the time, the big request is one song, not an entire set. It could be a first dance at a fortieth, something a dad used to play, or the song that has to be right at eleven. Send it to us early and we’ll learn it properly, just like we handle ceremony picks.

We won’t play a faked version of a song. If our three players and their three voices can’t perform it well, we’ll say so and suggest a song that works instead of giving you a thin version of one that matters to you.

What to send us for a quote

  1. Date, start time, music duration.
  2. Where it is, and whether it’s indoors, outdoors or both.
  3. An approximate guest count matters more for the PA than room size.
  4. Whether power is available near the band’s setup spot.
  5. Any song that absolutely has to happen.

Want your guests to sing instead of watch? Choose live band karaoke, where those same three players pass the mic to them.

Announcements and music between sets

Rik and Bob both handle the microphone, so announcements never hold up the music.

Our PA runs all night, not only during our sets. As guests arrive and between sets, we play recorded music through it, a playlist from a laptop. If you want more, Ricky Bobby DJ is a separate offering of Ricky Bobby Music that you can book together with the band in one booking.

You can pick the music, or tell us the mood and we’ll pick it. If you’ve hired your own DJ or host, they can use our system.

Common questions

Do you play Austin house or backyard parties?

Yes. Noise rules come from the city, not the musicians. In Austin, amplified sound on residential property is allowed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at up to 75 decibels. After 10 p.m., the sound may not carry past the property line.

Are three full sets required from the band?

No. Three sets make up a full evening, with roughly two and a half hours of music, and that works for a wedding. Tell us your party’s time window, and we’ll plan for fewer, longer sets or two longer sets. The music stays live throughout, and we’ll play for as long as you want.

Can the band play quietly in a small room?

Yes. For small rooms, we bring the acoustic rig: the same three players and the same voices, with percussion taking the place of the full drum kit.

Tell us your date and venue, along with how long you need music.
