Austin live music venues: the guide
Short answer: Start with the kind of room you want, then check that room’s calendar. For a historic South Congress club, look at the Continental Club or C-Boy’s. For Red River, look at Mohawk or Stubb’s. For a larger downtown theater, look at ACL Live. For a listening room, try the Saxon Pub. For a South Austin outdoor hang, look at The Far Out Lounge.
Searching for Austin live music venues or live music near me can produce a long, unhelpful pile of listings. Austin has more than 250 live music venues, says Visit Austin. The useful question is not “Where is the best music?” It is: what kind of night do you want, and which room is presenting it?
Pick the neighborhood first. Pick the show second. Then read the venue’s own event page before you buy a ticket. It will tell you the artist, door time, age policy, ticket rules, and the details that change from one Austin night to the next.
Austin live music venues by neighborhood and vibe
| Area | Start with | Good fit for | Know before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Congress | Continental Club, C-Boy’s Heart & Soul | Historic club rooms, roots music, soul and R&B | These are different rooms a short distance apart. Check the specific calendar. |
| South Lamar | Saxon Pub | A close-up listening-room night | The Saxon says its venue is 21+. |
| Red River and downtown | Mohawk, Stubb’s, ACL Live | Club bills, outdoor shows, and theater-scale concerts | Room size and ticket rules vary a lot. Read the show page, not a general guide. |
| South Austin | The Far Out Lounge | Outdoor space, food, drinks, and a more spread-out night | The venue describes itself as all ages and pet friendly. |
South Congress: historic clubs and a walkable music night
The Continental Club
The Continental Club on South Congress says it opened in 1955 and has been a live-music fixture through several lives, from supper club to burlesque club to working-class bar. Go here when you want the room itself to be part of the night. Its calendar is the deciding factor, so check the bill before you make the trip.
C-Boy’s Heart & Soul
A little farther down South Congress, C-Boy’s Heart & Soul calls itself a neighborhood juke joint and programs classic soul and R&B. Its own site notes a patio and an upstairs Jade Room, so this is a useful stop when you want a show with a bar-night feel instead of a formal theater experience.
South Congress makes sense when you want dinner, a walk, and a club show in the same part of town. It does not guarantee a particular genre on a particular night. The calendar wins.
South Lamar: a listening-room choice
The Saxon Pub
The Saxon Pub opened in 1990 and describes itself as an intimate listening room. Its site lists happy-hour shows, matinees, and late-night performances. That makes it a strong starting point if your idea of live music is listening closely instead of trying to talk over a packed room. The venue’s FAQ says it is 21+, has a cover charge every night, and sometimes has free happy-hour shows.
Red River and downtown: choose the room size
The Red River Cultural District packs stages close together. Visit Austin describes the district’s live-music venues as spanning a three-block radius, which is why it is the easiest place to make a night of more than one stop.
Mohawk
Mohawk is at 912 Red River and lists both indoor and outdoor-stage shows on its calendar. Its official site also marks some shows all ages. For a current band bill in the Red River district, this is one of the first calendars to check.
Stubb’s Bar-B-Q
Stubb’s combines a restaurant with a live-music calendar at 801 Red River. Its FAQ says it is a standing-room-only venue and asks guests to check the ticket or venue site for door times. That matters if you are planning a relaxed dinner or need a seated show. Read the listing for the specific event.
ACL Live at the Moody Theater
For a larger downtown room, ACL Live at the Moody Theater says it holds 2,750 people and presents modern music headliners and other entertainment. It is at 310 West Willie Nelson Boulevard. This is the choice when the artist and a theater-scale production matter more than hopping between small clubs.
South Austin: an outdoor, all-ages option
The Far Out Lounge and Stage
The Far Out Lounge and Stage is at 8504 South Congress. The venue says it serves food and drinks alongside live music and is all ages and pet friendly. Put it on the list when an outdoor setting and room to settle in sound better than downtown density.
How do you find live music near me tonight?
Use this order. It keeps you from discovering an age limit, sold-out room, or different start time at the door.
- Choose an area. South Congress, South Lamar, Red River, downtown, or South Austin are a better first filter than “Austin.”
- Open the venue’s own calendar. A venue’s event page is the source of record for its current bill, ticket link, doors, and restrictions.
- Read the ticket page. Confirm the show date, room, entry rules, and whether you are buying a standing-room or seated experience.
- Plan the rest of the night around the room. A Red River show can support an easy walk to another stop. A South Austin venue may be the whole evening.
For a broad view of what is happening this week, Visit Austin maintains an events calendar and city guide. Use it to discover a show, then confirm the details on the venue’s site.
Want live music at your own Austin party instead?
A venue show is great when you want to join someone else’s night. A private party is different: you pick the room, the guest list, and the pace. Ricky Bobby is an Austin three-piece cover and party band with drums, bass, guitar, and all three members singing. For birthdays, weddings, corporate events, holiday parties, galas, and other gatherings, see the party options.
If your group wants the music to be part of the entertainment, not just the soundtrack, Ricky Bobby Music can also be booked as a band, DJ, karaoke service, or a combination. Tell us what you are planning through the booking form.
