What songs do Austin cover bands play most?
- We reviewed 13 Austin cover-band song lists, each covering several decades and genres. That adds up to 3,098 listed titles and 1,609 distinct songs once duplicates are removed.
- No list among the 13 contains every song. 7 songs are found on 11 lists.
- Only 537 songs, or one-third of the total, appear on more than one band’s list. The other 1,072 appear on one band’s list and no others.
- The songs only one band has are not leftovers. They cluster around certain artists and eras for each band, revealing what that band really plays: one holds 21 Sinatra songs, while another holds Willie Nelson and Tom Petty.
- We ran the same measure on ourselves: 41 percent of our own setlist is played by none of the bands counted here.
- The figures exclude two acts focused on one genre from the same research: an eighties tribute band and a nineties country band. Those acts address a different question.
- Most songs appear on a single list. About two-thirds aren’t on any other band’s list.
- Songs played by every band won’t help you distinguish between two groups. Instead, look for what one band plays that the others do not.
Everybody assumes cover bands all play the same songs. As far as we can tell, nobody had ever actually counted them before.
We counted the songs ourselves. During July 2026, we collected eleven complete, unfiltered song lists from working bands in Austin. The 13 groups cover decades and genres, with 3,098 song entries and 1,609 different titles after duplicates are removed. Our goal was to use evidence rather than taste to build a setlist of our own. The findings proved more interesting than the setlist.
The 13 Austin cover band song lists we examined contain 1,609 different songs in all. Not one song appears on every one of the 13 lists. 7 appear on 11, while just 537 songs overall, one third of the total, appear on more than one band’s list.
What we counted, and how
The method comes first, since citing a number without one means nothing.
- 13 Austin groups play weddings, parties and private events across decades and styles. We used each band’s full published song list without excluding any era or genre.
- Altogether, those 13 lists hold 3,098 songs.
- A few bands listed the same song twice, beneath two different headings. The 3,098 figure comes from counting each song a single time per band.
- Because some songs appear on multiple lists, we counted each only once. The result is 1,609 different songs. Different spellings of a title also counted as one song: “Dancin’ in the Dark” and “Dancing in the Dark” were not counted twice.
- Every figure on this page excludes two single-lane acts: one eighties tribute band listing 67 songs and one nineties country band listing 68. For each band, nobody else in the count plays between two thirds and three quarters of its songs. Captured during the same research, they address a different question. Including them pulled every shared-song number down and made the top of the table appear thinner than reality. We kept them in the dataset but excluded them from the analysis.
- We excluded two more bands because their song pages were unavailable when we checked, plus a third that publishes no song list.
- On July 20, 2026 we gathered eleven lists, then added two more on July 28, 2026. We completed the counts on July 28, 2026.
We do not publish the names of the bands in our sample. We provide totals only, and that policy will not change. We measure the market rather than compare individual competitors; we do not write those comparisons.

The core they share
Below is each song that two or more of the 13 bands carry, 537 of them, sorted by how many lists it appears on. A song found on just one list reflects only that band’s choice, not the market. That’s why the minimum is two.
What “no song is on all 13” really means
That means no single song is played by every band in this count. None do. No song comes closer than eight songs that appear on 11 of the 13 lists. For each of those eight, exactly one band leaves it off its list.
The main point is that a different band leaves out each song. Four separate bands account for those eight gaps. One band skips four songs, another skips two, and two others skip one each. No single outlier drags the number down. Gaps appear on every list, in different places.
If you’re hiring a band, keep this in mind: you can’t assume any one song is known by every Austin group. Each of the eight highest-ranked songs in this survey is missing from at least one working band’s list. Ask the band instead of assuming.
Nine lists or more include twenty-one songs. That is the nearest thing Austin has to a common songbook, and that group stays small before the numbers start to fall.

Two patterns are clear. Texas country takes up far more top spots here than it would on a national list. The songs also cover a wide period: eighteen songs date from 1967 through 2015, which suggests these lists serve rooms with three generations.
Most songs appear nowhere else
This table holds every song from the tally, ordered by how many of the 13 bands play it.
Of the 1,609 songs counted across the bands, 1,072 appear on only one list. For each such song, one group plays it and the other ten don’t. That means two thirds of all songs listed by working Austin cover bands are played by just one band apiece.
The 1,072 songs do not belong to any one band’s set, which is the mistake people often make. All 13 bands hold some of them. Each group keeps a private corner of songs nobody else in this count plays, and those 13 corners total 1,072, which comes to 82 songs on average per band.
What stands out more is how unevenly those shares are spread. The two longest lists hold 641 of the 1,072 between them, about two thirds. Down at the other end, a single band lists only 7 songs nobody else plays. A long published list gets most of its length from songs the other bands skip.
The other 537 songs appear on at least two bands' lists. Among the 1,609 songs counted across all these cover bands, those are all the songs the bands share. One third are shared; two thirds aren’t.
Each group’s specialty is found in its private corner
What makes the private sets most interesting is that they are not random. Each has a distinct pattern that shows the musical niche the band actually plays.
At 335 songs, the biggest private corner includes 21 from Frank Sinatra plus another 7 from Michael Bublé. None of this is a random assortment of leftovers. What they form is a dinner and standards collection that no other band in this count carries. A second band likewise holds 335 private songs, yet its leading names are Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson and Neil Young: an americana lane, and an entirely separate one.
Farther down, you can see the same pattern on a smaller scale. One band’s list centers on Alan Jackson, Toby Keith and Brooks and Dunn. Another centers on NSYNC, Usher and Backstreet Boys. Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and the Jackson 5 lead a third. A list with Pachelbel’s Canon and Ave Maria is for ceremonies rather than parties.
The size of a band’s private corner is a decent measure of how specialized it is. The three most distinctive groups here reserve 55, 71, and 37 percent of their whole list for themselves. The three least distinctive reserve only 3, 6, and 7 percent, meaning nearly everything they perform is also played by someone else in town.
If you are booking, look closely at that last group. Having a list that overlaps 97 percent with others does not make a band bad. It means the songs they list are nearly the same as those listed by several other bands. How they perform sets them apart, rather than which songs they play; you cannot see that on a song list.
| Played by | Number of songs | Share of all 1,609 |
|---|---|---|
| All 13 bands | 0 | 0.0% |
| 12 of the 13 bands | 0 | 0.0% |
| 11 of the 13 bands | 7 | 0.4% |
| 10 of the 13 bands | 14 | 0.9% |
| 9 of the 13 bands | 11 | 0.7% |
| 8 of the 13 bands | 18 | 1.1% |
| 7 of the 13 bands | 17 | 1.1% |
| 6 of the 13 bands | 33 | 2.1% |
| 5 of the 13 bands | 43 | 2.7% |
| 4 of the 13 bands | 67 | 4.2% |
| 3 of the 13 bands | 112 | 7.0% |
| 2 of the 13 bands | 215 | 13.4% |
| 1 band only, not shared | 1072 | 66.6% |
Just 126 songs appear on five or more lists, accounting for 8.4 percent of the total. Meanwhile 1,072 songs, a bit more than two thirds of the total, show up on a single list and nowhere else, spread over all 13 bands at an average of 91 each.
The numbers explain what might first seem like a contradiction. Most groups hover near a core of reliable songs that get people dancing because those choices succeed and their value is common knowledge. Where they differ is in everything else they select, since that remaining space offers the only chance to be distinct.
The songs everybody plays
Roughly a hundred songs that almost everybody carries. Dependable, but of little use when comparing two bands. A band that pitches itself by saying it plays these songs tells you nothing.
Everything else
Two thirds of the songs, and the spot where a band’s real personality shows. The ones they reach for at eleven o’clock, the lane they are genuinely good in, and whether any of that matches what you like.
Our place in the numbers
It would look bad to measure how bands differ and leave ourselves out, so we applied that calculation to our own song list.
Of the 70 songs we publish, 29 of them, 41 percent, are played by none of the 13 bands in this count. At least one of those bands also plays the other 41, while 8 fall into the widely-carried tier played by nine or more bands.
Half the mix lands in the canon and half in the lane, which is deliberate. Those songs earn their place in the shared half because they work and audiences ask for them. Where the band genuinely resides is the other half: nineties alternative and grunge, hard rock, plus a slice of eighties songs that the broader market in this count largely overlooks.
Under the measure above, we would rank with the more specialized bands, not the interchangeable ones. We include our result so you can check the public method yourself: our complete setlist is posted, the figures above come from that file, and you can run the comparison yourself.
What this means for your hiring decision
Ask about the songs other bands skip. Asking “Do you play Uptown Funk” will likely get an answer you expect, but it won’t tell you much. Better questions:
- Which songs do you play that most local bands do not?
- Once everyone has had a drink, what does the third set look like?
- What would you not play, and why?
- Will you learn something specific for us, and how much notice do you need?
The last point is more important than a band’s song count. We cover it in what a live band plays during a ceremony. Everything else in the booking conversation is covered in what to ask a band before you book them.
Our full answer is online in the complete setlist: all seventy songs grouped by set, with the original recording artist named for each. We built that list from this data.
What the data does not say
Four honest limits, and they outweigh the headline.
- Not every Austin act is represented by eleven bands. The group gives a fair snapshot of the working private-event circuit, but no more.
- When a band publishes a song list, it shows what the band says it can play, not what it has played. Bands keep songs on their lists that they rarely perform.
- Reality moves faster than published lists. Songs that broke this year will appear less often.
- We pulled these counts from a July 2026 snapshot. Rosters change, so this page needs to be recomputed rather than just getting old.

Common questions
Do all cover bands perform the same songs?
Less than people assume. Looking at 13 song lists from Austin cover bands, not one song is played by all 13. Just 7 songs show up on 11 of the lists. Of the 1,609 different songs, only 537 appear on more than one band’s list. That means most songs a band plays are not shared.
How many songs does a cover band have?
The range is wider than you would expect. Across the eleven lists we counted, song totals range from 78 to 614 and average 238. A published list tells you what a band says it can play, not what it actually plays during a show, so read the number as a maximum.
Which questions reveal a band’s song choices?
The finding about specialization above has a practical use: ask bands which songs they play that no other band in town does. One answer shows you their lane. When the truthful answer is “not much”, that is useful to know as well.
Ask which songs they play beyond the obvious hundred. What everybody plays differs little from band to band. The two real differences are the songs beyond those and whether a band will learn a request.
